Dance Concept: Focus

There are 3 types of focus:

  • Singe focus develops attention span – ability to filter out non-essential input and focus on the task at hand

  • Multi-focus develops sensory processing – ability to take in multiple sensory input and not get overwhelmed

  • Internal focus develops body image – helping our kiddos know themselves and their body in their minds view

Creating opportunities to look, point and focus on a single object, like a body part or prop helps build concentration and attention to task. Attention is the gateway for learning. Without it, all efforts to learn are hindered by a scattered focus.

Focus is challenging to develop because it requires filtering out non-essential input, knowing what needs to be attended to, then responding to the stimulation appropriately. That’s why it takes time and repetition to develop!

The other key ingredient to building attention is a secure emotional attachment – the research shows that is the glue that allows a child to feel safe and open to engage in new experiences with curiosity and engagement. Focus is the brain’s best friend and now is the time to build that capacity for your little one.
